| Vegetarian Times: Chicago's Soul Vegetarian |
Chicago's Soul Vegetarian - restaurant specializing in African American cuisine - includes recipes.
When was the first time you heard the expression soul food? Back in the '60s sometime? The term is of rather recent vintage, having first appeared in print in 1964, according to The Dictionary of American Food and Drink (Hearst Books, 1994). Author John Mariani says the term refers to the spirit among African-Americans that their culture, heritage and cooking gives them an essential "soulfulness" that helps define the African-American experience. |

PETA pal John Feldmann, lead singer of the punk band Goldfinger, raves: "Soul Vegetarian has the most awesome vegan lasagna and vegan gyro sandwiches ever!"
John's not the only one singing the praises of the Soul Vegetarian restaurants. PETA's elephant specialist, Jane Garrison, says, "When you walk into Soul Vegetarian South, the aroma of the food carries you (running) down the hall to the dining room. The people who run the restaurant always greet you as if you are entering their home-after the second visit, we were greeted with hugs! |

You'll be amazed by this tiny no-frills restaurant's tasty natural vegetable meals: soy sausages, vegetarian shwarmas, wheat burgers, tofu falafels, vegetarian faux steak sandwiches, and soy ice creams. My favorite is the barbecued twist on whole wheat pita served with medium spicy sauce and homemade mustard. Founded by the Hebrew Israelites, an African-American religious group whose dietary laws prohibit milk or meat products, The Taste of Life uses no milk or meat, nothing is fried, there is no cholesterol, and almost no salt, yet everything tastes great.
Other delicious choices here are steamed vegetables and veggie stir-fries, tofu cheeses in assorted flavors, and okira sticks that seem a bit like fish sticks! Drinks include juices, veggie coffee, and carob milk. For dessert there's soy ice cream and carob cakes and candies. |

| Chicago Tribune Reviews Soul Vegetarian East |
A smorgasbord of low-fat entrees, with just enough "soul" to fool the tastebuds, awaits patrons of this vegetarian hang-out. Although the menu lists BBQ Roast and BBQ Twist among the choices, rest assured that absolutely no animal products are used in any of the dishes. "It's soul food without the meat," says one of the managers of this small restaurant. On Sunday during dinner hours, the place is packed.
A recent review suggested to "put the newspaper down and get to Soul Vegetarian...immediately". |

YELP!
This is the best vegetarian restaurant I have been to in a long time. My boyfriend and I went to the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant seems more than a bit out of place. By day it takes over a night club, at at night, it appears to be one popular place. The food was fabulous. We both ordered the sampler plate which included BBQ tofu, hearty loaf, mac n' cheese, greens, and sweet potatoes. All were incredibly delicious. The mac n 'cheese was incredible.
The sweet potatoes tasted like candy. For desert we ordered pineapple upside-down cake, which reminded me of honey cake. It was so amazing, I have dreams about it. |

Friday night, Alex took me to a vegan restaurant I had read about before, but had never visited: Soul Vegetarian on Georgia Ave in DC (not far from Howard University). With 17 locations around the world (including Israel, Ghana, St. Croix, and England), Soul Vegetarian is the largest vegetarian restaurant chain in the world and is based on the diet of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem.
The menu offers a variety of meat-substitute dishes, vegetables, soy shakes, and desserts.
I had the steak and cheese (wheat protein with sauteed peppers, onions, and soy cheese on a pita), sides of collard greens and broccoli with a peanut butter soy shake. The peanut butter shake may have been a mistake, but the sandwich and sides made up for it. I was totally filled, which is kind of a shame because I would have liked to try one of their desserts. Alex is a big fan of their macaroni and cheese and their gyro, which comes complete with vegan tzatziki sauce. |

Soul Vegetarian East
The name says it all. Soul Vegetarian East dishes up good healthy food with a soulful twist. African art hangs on the walls as servers greet you with a smile in colorful African garb. This popular vegetarian restaurant can be just as crowded during the week as it is on the weekend. Southsiders and outsiders flock to this space to sample some of the best vegan/vegetarian food in the city. All dishes are made with meat substitute and most taste better then the real thing. The Garvey Burger (wheat gluten veggie-burger) seems to be a popular choice as well as the BBQ (gluten) roast sandwich. Other specialties include tofu lasagna (not always offered), macaroni & cheese and the Salisbury steak dinner. Sandwiches will set you back a mere $4, while specialties rarely cost more than $10. Starters like fried tofu sticks and lentil soups are just a few bucks as well. |

Soul Vegetarian East Restaurant
This vegetarian restaurant, in business for over 18 years, is worth the stop. Slightly Spartan decor allows the menu to take center stage. Choose from barbecued wheat gluten, a stir-fry "steak" dish, and other creative meatless dishes. Vegans and health-conscious beware: Many dishes are fried and may contain non-vegan ingredients. Open for breakfast and lunch Mon - Sat; dinner served daily; Sunday brunch available. - Alotta, 08/28/2003 |

Soul Vegetarian South
Description: Located behind a day care center, Soul Vegetarian South would be hard to find if not for the sign out front. It is an unassuming restaurant run primarily by its owner, who is both friendly and flexible. The decor is rather plain and African Hebrew videos play on a small television, providing a relaxed atmosphere. The juice bar offers a wide range of selections, and all items on the menu are healthy. Most items are vegan as well. Recommended Dishes: Carrot Salad Sandwich and Everlasting life shake carrot salad, protein salad, split pea soup, Hebrew Sunrise (drink) BBQ kalebone, Carob cake. |

This is the original site of this distinctly Southern genre restaurant. Located near the Atlanta colleges district (Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta , & Morris Brown), Soul Vegetarian is comfortable for the local college crowd, and it offers healthy, African vegetarian food with an Ethiopian slant. They specialize in cholesterol-free food, and do a pretty good business. Soul Vegetarian serves an American menu an emphasis on vegetarian meals and vegan foods. Expect the average entre to cost $8 to $12, and dress casual. |
